Self-referrals,
The Osteoporosis Scanning Service for private patients
Osteo-Scan North East provides a confidential and professional service for private self referrals primarily in the North East.
Osteo-Scan North East offers you the opportunity to find out whether your bones are below the correct strength and therefore at greater risk of fracturing.
A bone density scan, or DEXA (dual energy xray absorptiometry) scan measures the bone mineral content and density. It is an accurate and reliable means of assessing bone strength and risk of fracture.
If you are concerned that you are in the 'at-risk' category, you can ask to be considered for a bone density scan. A scan will be authorised if relevant risk factors are present.
It is a simple procedure involving a 3-minute scan of the forearm. It is completely painless and does not require you to undress.
An accurate computerised result is available immediately. It is not necessary to have a referral from your GP but a copy of the result will be sent to the doctor for retention in your medical records.
Any scan results falling outside the normal expected range may be referred to a Consultant for a further detailed report.
By finding out more you can pass on your knowledge to family and friends, perhaps even help prevent a future fracture.

Remember, if diagnosed early, osteoporosis can be treated.
